Tri Bourne and John Hyden won their first World Tour gold medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Berlin smart Grand Slam. They beat their fellow Americans Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena 2:0 (21:17, 21:11) in the final in the German capital. Both teams came all the way from qualification, Bourne and Hyden even without losing a match. It was the first time in FIVB history two qualifying teams made it to the gold medal match of a Grand Slam. “I don’t know what happened here”, said a stunned Bourne after the final. “We just ended up here.” Both players had never even won a medal of any colour before on the World Tour. Women World Tour Moscow Grand Slam 2014 (Highlights)
April Ross and Kerri Walsh claimed their first Grand Slam gold medal when they defeated reigning FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour champions Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima on Sunday. The USA pair defeated the Brazilians 2-1 (21:17, 22:24, 15:13) in a match that swung backwards and forwards between two determined teams until Ross and Walsh nudged ahead right at the end of the third set before winning with their second match point. “I loved how we pulled it out in the end. We played as a team and it feels really good to win again.” It is Ross and Walsh’s second gold medal of 2014 after they won the season opening Fuzhou Open in China. They first teamed up in mid-2013 and won the Sao Paolo and Xiamen Grand Slams before the end of the year. The pair joined together after their previous partners - Misty May Treanor and Jennifer Kessy – retired from the sport. In the men’s competition in Moscow, winning the gold medal in a two-set finale was Russia’s Viacheslav Krasilnikov/Konstantin Semenov over Poland’s Grzegorz Fijalek/Mariusz Prudel while and the bronze medal match saw USA’s Phil Dalhausser/Sean Rosenthal hold off the comeback Italy’s Daniele Lupo/Paolo Nicolai in three-set match to win the bronze. "It was a hard match and was all about serving", Dalhausser said. "Whoever served best would win the points and we served really well in the final set so that is probably why we won". Victoria Bieneck and Julia Grossner won their first ever FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour gold medals when they beat Ekaterina Syrtseva and Alexandra Shiryaeva in the gold medal match. The German duo beat the Russian pair 2:0 (22:20, 21:19) in 36 minutes in a match that swung to and fro in both sets before Bieneck and Grossner took a grip as the sets reached their conclusions. “It is the first time we were in the semifinal and now it is the first time that we have won a gold medal and we are so happy, though we didn’t believe it before the tournament,” Bieneck said. “I didn’t expect it to be two sets,” Grossner added. “They are a very good team and very tough and in every set we were behind for a while and came back, but we always believed we could win this game.” Prior to the tournament the pair’s best finish was a quarterfinal place at the 2013 Corrientes Grand Slam, though Bieneck won FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships at U19 level in 2009 and U23 level in 2013. Women World Tour Prague Open 2014 (Highlights)
Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova won the inaugural women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Prague Open on Sunday. It was double joy for the Czech team, it was their first World Tour medal and they also won it in their hometown Prague in front of friends and family. Kolocova and Slukova defeated Germany’s Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler 2:1 (21:18, 16:21, 15:12) in the final in the sunny and packed Stvanice stadium. So far their best result in 48 World Tour events was 4th place at the Berlin Grand Slam last year. "I still can’t believe it", 26-year old Kolocova said right after the match. At 20:10 the ball bounced off Doherty’s block and the gold was theirs. "No words can describe this", said Hyden. "I have waited for this for a while. I had a great weekend. It rained a lot and I love playing in the rain. It’s been a great tournament. But he was a fast learner, and within 12 months, he claimed the under-21 state championship title and had entered the national circuit. A lack of sponsorship and funding saw him almost give up his sport, and his career teetered on the brink of a permanent hiatusin 2005 when he opted to focus on a Business Administration study course. But a blistering display at what was to be his final appearance on court saw him propelled to a qualifying session where he attracted the attention of sponsors. From that moment, his fate changed – life as a full-time beach volleyball athlete was about to begin. Amongst his many sporting accolades, Alison has claimed a World Championship team title, a Pan American Games team title, a silver Olympic medal and a second place on the podium the 2012 World Championships in Switzerland. Emanuel Rego (born April 15, 1973 in Curitiba) is a beach volleyball player from Brazil, who competed in five consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1996. He won the gold medal in the men's beach team competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, partnering Ricardo Santos. The pair Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen became the first Dutch team to win a World Championships medal when they beat Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho in the final game. One of the tallest and youngest beach volleyball teams in the world were the pleasant surprise of the ninth World Championship, held in the small, but vivid Polish village Stare Jablonki. In the the final of women's tournament in the World Championships, players from China: Chen Xue and Zhang Xi defeated 2:1 Germans Britta Buthe and Karla Borger. The awarding ceremony reflected the great diversity seen throughout the tournament. With Paraguay, Thailand and Vanuatu making their debuts in at the FIVB World Championships, the flags raised in time with the anthems came from three different continents. Poland has an extensive history of hosting beach volleyball events with the Myslowice Open and the Mazury Orlen Grand Slam in Stare Jablonki having been regular tournaments on the World Tour. Alison and Emanuel return to climb to the top of the podium in the Brazilian Circuit. In Guaruja, they defeated Bruno and Hevaldo by 2-0 (21:19 and 23:21). The final was very balanced, and the two sets, good looking, with the decision being enshrined only in the partial order. At first, the duel followed a draw, but with two blocks of "Mamute" (Mammoth), Alison and Emanuel opened 1-0 with 21:19. The pair Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen became the first Dutch team to win a World Championships medal when they beat Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho to claim gold in the final of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 on Sunday. One of the tallest and youngest beach volleyball teams in the world were the pleasant surprise of the ninth World Championship, held in the small, but vivid Polish village Stare Jablonki. See the final of women's tournament in the World Championships, in which China's players Chen Xue and Zhang Xi defeated 2:1 Germans Britta Buthe and Karla Borger. The awarding ceremony reflected the great diversity seen throughout the tournament. With Paraguay, Thailand and Vanuatu making their debuts in at the FIVB World Championships, the flags raised in time with the anthems came from three different continents with Brazil having claimed the bronze medal through Lili and Seixas’ win over USA’s April Ross and Whitney Pavlik earlier in the day. Poland has an extensive history of hosting beach volleyball events with the Myslowice Open and the Mazury Orlen Grand Slam in Stare Jablonki having been regular tournaments on the World Tour.
